Hunkered Down in Madison KS

Yesterday we found a beautiful little lake just south of Madison KS. 110 electric for $6 a night, or $2 if you don't take advantage of the electric. We are the only ones here, and there is a reason for that. All the locals are at home waiting out the bad weather. we are too, it just so happens our home is parked in path of the storms.

When we left Tulsa we thought we could get far enough north to avoid the bad weather, and yesterday was really nice. We even saw the sunshine for a few hours. Over night the clouds moved in, and sever thunderstorms are all around us. Tomorrows forecast is much of the same, so we will try to find a window to get a little further north. We also need to fill up the fresh water since we only carry enough for a couple days and didn't know they wouldn't have water here when we found this place.

Oh well everyday is an adventure, and I would rather be waiting on storms here than sitting in the old sticks and bricks back in KY. I will AVOID this part of the country during future springs.

So if you are planning an event and want us to be there make sure it isn't near tornado alley during the spring, or in a hurricane prone area during the fall, and we all already know I don't do COLD.

Climax kansas

We made it to Climax KS today, I'm really glad we didn't blink, because I passed it up without blinking. Never fear Charlene showed us a way back, but we encountered one little problem, NO BRIDGE across the creek.

I guess the creek was high due to all the rain, but I wouldn't even consider taking the tracker through that creek. We unhooked the car and I backed the MH out the dirt road for about 1/4 mile.

We stopped in Hamilton KS to eat at the only place we saw. It turned out to be pretty good. They served breakfast all day so I had a biscuit, two eggs, hash browns, and a big slice of ham for $4, Marcia had a chicken strip dinner for $6.50. My kind of prices!

While at the restaurant a guy told us about Madison Lake, (10 miles up the road) where people camped. He didn't have any more information on it, so we figured we would check it out.

Madison Lake is just south of Madison KS,on hwy 99, the lake is over full right now, but it is a beautiful little lake. The camping is free for residents, and $2 a night for non residents without electric, and $4 and $6 with 110 electric. I haven't found a dump station, or water here, (but then I haven't looked) but for $2-$6 a night you could come prepared. They do have a 7 day limit here, I guess that could keep people from homesteading it.

We will hang here for a day or two and scope out the town....

On the ROAD again

Today we will be leaving Keystone Lake State Park, and the Carters. We have really enjoyed the company of Jay,Fay, and Lulu, but we want these wheels rolling so we can see more of the great country.

Yesterday we walked through the flea market in Tulsa, and then Jay drove us over to Broken Arrow to meet Bill Darnell. Bill owns the country cabin and the property where we stayed when we visited The Carters last year. The Chapman s were there at the same time and we had a mini reunion of the class of 07.

We were undecided about leaving today or tomorrow, but looking at the map I saw a town in Kansas that we have to visit. In PA we went to "Intercourse", now we found "Climax" in Kansas so it became a must do for us.

One of the great things about living in an RV is if you do see a place or thing on TV, or a magazine you can just go there. So we will be headed for "Climax" Kansas today...

Cold Fronts

Cold fronts are not my friend, when they dip south my bones tell me all about them. Today a front came through this area, even though we were spared the rain, we did have the drop in temperatures. It was a cool day with a fair breeze, not near as bad as the weather forecast.

The Carters made breakfast for us and Fay's sister and husband. It was breakfast burritos, ground up sausage and eggs, a cheesy dip and salsa wrapped in a flour tortilla. They were really good, in spite of thinking burritos for breakfast.

Later in the day two of Fay's sisters and one of her brothers brought their families out to the lake for hot dogs. The girls fixed up all the fixings, and Jay grilled the dogs. There was about 20 here for the cookout, and everyone got their fill of food. (something the class of 07 knows all too well).

It was really good to be around babies, small kids, young adults, and old folks. Full timing we get our share of the old folks in our travels so it is nice to have the younger ones around for a while.

After everyone left Fay Marcia and I drove across town to play bingo. It wasn't a good night at bingo for us, we had a hard time keeping up with the caller. I did get to yell bingo, but found out they didn't count postage stamps in the triple bingo game, so I didn't have the bingo. Lucky for me there were two others that called bingo so I didn't interrupt the game.

Tomorrow being Mothers Day I want to wish all the moms that read this a very happy Mothers day.

A do nothing day

Today was pretty much a do nothing day. Jay and Fay did take us to a land mark BBQ place called, Knotty Pine. Jay told stories about responding to a domestic disturbance there when he was on the police force. He took care of the bad guy and the owner was so appreciative she wouldn't let him pay for anything he got there from that day until the day she passed away.

Eating such good food I just had to take a nap afterward, so the girls brought us guys back to the rig for naps so they could do some sightseeing and shopping.

Later I got to fly my plane, it was really relaxing controlling the little jet as it flew around and around. I only had to climb one tree to retrieve it, but even that reminded me of my younger days climbing trees just to say I climbed that tree.

Tomorrow the weatherman say rain so we will just wait and see what tomorrow really brings.

Keystone Lake State Park near Tulsa OK

We had to leave the great hospitality of Roger and Brenda today, we really enjoyed our time with them, but I need our wheels to be rolling. We drove up to Keystone Lake outside of Tulsa. It is only about 130 miles, but we took the scenic route and avoided going near Tulsa so it turned out to be a lot more miles and a lot longer drive, but that is the beauty of living in a RV.

We were greeted by Jay and Fay, it was really good to see them again. They led us to our site next to them and then they let us do our thing unhooking the tracker and hooking up the rig.

The lake is over full, I guess they have been holding some of the water to keep from flooding out the places below the dam, with all the rain they have had the past few days.

Check out the BBQ grill, anyone for burgers?
